My classmates and I were assigned a text to web remediation assignment. This
assignment allowed us to first write a essay, turn the essay into a website, and then peer review it so we could revise it into a new website. When we first got assigned this, I was nervous and felt like I knew I was going to be overwhelmed. Just the essay alone was at a length that I had never done before. I was able to complete all of it quickly and efficiently. I was nervous for no reason because with the correct amount of effort and time, it came out very nice.
Let’s start off with the process from my 8 page essay to my website. For my website, I
decided to use a site called wordpress which allowed me to get creative and really put out everything I envisioned. From my essay I had to think of website tabs and titles that could appropriately fit into my site. After figuring out those, I had to input the information. This part wasn’t too challenging because I had already found out all of the information and evidence regarding illegal immigration between the U.S. and Mexico border. I had to change some words though, to make it seem more like a reliable website rather than a personal essay. After that, my creative side came out. I chose a theme off of wordpress and began to input pictures and videos that supported my topic. This helped my website be brought more to life because there were now
visuals for individuals to use to understand the information. Lastly, I made sure to update my works cited page. With adding new photos and videos, means adding more cited sources. My works cited page grew much larger in length. Overall transitioning from an essay to a website was pretty simple and actually fun. Having the information already really did make it easier and quicker than if I started from scratch. I enjoyed this process because it allowed me to be creative and try something I’ve never done before. This was definitely not the final step to this assignment though.
The next step involved my website and getting it peer reviewed. In class, we presented
our websites to the class. After that, our professor assigned us a partner which allowed us to peer review each other’s website and give feedback for change. The partner I was assigned loved my website and didn’t really make any changes. After reviewing hers, I didn’t make any changes but I did give her some ideas to improve her site. Everyone starts with the same website layout so it’s good to change it and be unique in a way. I believe peer review is very important because it allows you to get the perspective from another individual. Everyone has their own opinion and views things differently so I believe that peer review allows you to not only see your perspective.
This assignment allowed me to learn many things. One thing I learned was how to make
a website. Before entering into this class, I never tried to make a website so I didn’t know where to even start. Through just this semester we have made 2 websites and are currently working on our third one. I love to learn new things that could benefit me in my future and this is one of those things. I major in psychology and minor in child and adolescent development so I could only imagine how many times I may be able to revert back to this knowledge. The second thing Iearned was being able to properly write a 7-8 page long paper. This was my first time writing a
paper at this length and in the beginning I was nervous. I believed that there was no way I could write a paper that long. As I started writing I had so many ideas and things that I wanted to include that I even had to start deleting ideas because it was getting to long. This made me realize that I am capable of writing many pages. This is also a good skill to have for my future because many people that are in the same field as me state that there are tons of papers that will be assigned constantly and they have a long length as well. The last thing I learned was to truly accept the peer review feedback. There are plenty of times that I may get feedback but I don’t actually listen to it because I like what I like and believe that it’s my paper so I can do what I want. This is not the case though because I sometimes forget that everyone has their own perspective and sometimes they are giving you really good advice. Feedback is very important and after this I believe that I am way more accepting of other people’s opinions. Overall I learned
a lot from this assignment and I’m super grateful.
In the beginning, it seemed like this assignment was going to be tough. I had never
written that many pages before, never made a website, and more. At the end of it, I realized that it was not tough at all it just took effort. Overall though I am happy for this assignment because it taught me a lot and everything I learned will help me tremendously in my future.
